Continuing in the holiday spirit of giving back, the Smith & Wollensky Restaurant Group hosted appreciation dinners in January to honor support staff, families and friends impacted by autism. Honorees were nominated and selected for their commitment and dedication to raising awareness of autism spectrum disorder or for making a significant impact in the lives of individuals with autism.
On January 26th, Smith & Wollensky at Atlantic Wharf hosted Heidi McGilvray from Milford, Massachusetts. For the last nine years, Heidi has taught an integrated preschool class at Feeney Preschool in Walpole, Massachusetts. Heidi strives to bring out the potential in each of her students and create a collaborative relationship with their families. For many parents of children with Autism Spectrum Disorders, there are feelings of nervousness about how their children will adjust to a school setting. Heidi has worked to ease the children into their new surroundings by creating personalized programs for each student that have also shown improved language and behavior. She was recently asked to advise other preschool programs in the school district on how to improve their special education programs.
Smith & Wollensky Restaurant Group is a proud supporter of the Doug Flutie Jr. Foundation for Autism. For more information on the foundation’s grants and programs, please visit www.flutiefoundation.org.
